Try saying this in one breath:
In the beginning somebody started a meme and tagged somebody else. At some point (I hope to continue the history later) Amanda tagged Alyssa tagged Sara tagged Erica tagged Heather tagged Jackie tagged Cathy tagged Victoria tagged Dawno tagged D.T. tagged Simran tagged Kelly tagged Holly tagged Wendy tagged Pam tagged Phil tagged Kammie tagged Tony tagged Rosa tagged Leah tagged Char tagged ...
... me. :)
Who really started this meme and when? I'd like to congratulate them. All I could figure out is that it appears that the "five things" meme used to be "seven things" (about multiple aspects of a person's life) and that it's been around since at least August 2005.
Of course this meme can't spread forever - but it has spread like wildfire. Why? Because:
1. It invokes peer pressure (in a good way).
2. It asks people to talk about themselves. (Which most people, expecially bloggers, like to do.)
3. It's fun.
4. It's easy.
5. It's free.
6. It asks people to share secrets.
7. Hmm ... why else? What do you think?
I'll be spilling my five secrets here soon. Grab my feed so you don't miss it.

Nice way to build the anticipation! And educate us all in the process.
