Know More Media Vice President of Publishing Dan Smith uses a couple network blogs to demostrate the power of effective social networking.
We have seen time and again that proper utilization of social media sites can bring a lot of traffic to blogs. Some excellent example of this are Alex Ion on BizToolbelt.com, L. Lewis on PharmaGazette.com, and Mihnea Boiangiu on Gearater.com, who have all accomplished significant traffic increases in the past few month: BizToolbelt traffic, PharmaGazette traffic, Gearater traffic.
These increases begin with the excellent content these authors produce, and they are magnified because the authors effectively promote their best posts on social media sites, StumbleUpon in particular. It is well worth the effort to intelligently utilize social media sites, adhering to some important guidelines (thanks to Kimberlee Morrison for these):
Be selective - submitting every article is not a good idea. Figure out what the community tends to like, and focus on submitting those articles even if it is not a majority of your articles.
Votes do not equal Pageviews - While there has been assertion of the groupthink theory for social news sites, I think people read before they vote - I know I do.
Interact (& Participate) - This is what makes promoting the KMM posts on social media sites time consuming but also effective. I am fast, but I spend part of my day reading and commenting outside the network (mostly on Newsvine) in order to gain credibility and connectedness with the community.
Here are some social media sites you can submit your posts to (please add more you know of in the Comments section of this post):
